These results come from a Lincon University computer simulation analysis conducted on behalf of the Pine Manufacturers Association. A model home compared exteriors of plasterboard, timber frame and brick veneer with several thicknesses of solid timber walls. Internal walls were similarly compared.
The study found that the energy savings from the thermal mass (the capacity of a material to store and exchange heat) of solid wood 40mm or greater out performs that of a timber frame and plasterboard wall between 4-24% - increasing with wall thickness.
